Derrick White, a Partner at FTP, joined the firm in October 2015.
Mr. White came to FTP from the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), where he was a member of the Federal Government Relations team from 2012 to 2015. At BIO, Mr. White led the organization’s engagement with Republican Senators, their staffs, and Committee staffs. Mr. White also played a central role in BIO’s efforts on reauthorization of the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA V) via the Food and Drug Safety and Innovation Act (FDASIA), the Drug Quality and Security Act, patent reform, 340B reform, biodefense, and vaccines. Mr. White also led BIO’s efforts on the 21st Century Cures legislation, patent reform legislation, and preparations associated with the next reauthorization of PDUFA (PDUFA VI).
Previously, as an independent consultant, Mr. White advised and represented the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) and other biopharmaceutical companies on the legislative deliberations on both the Affordable Care Act of 2009 and the America Invents Act of 2011.
Mr. White’s independent role followed his work as a member of the Federal Government Relations team at PhRMA from 2001 to 2009. Mr. White worked on a broad range of issues, including Medicare, Medicaid, the reauthorizations of the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA III and IV, FDAAA), the Project Bioshield Act of 2004, 340B reform, biodefense, patents, and vaccines. While at PhRMA, Mr. White also played a crucial role in working with Congress to craft and pass the landmark Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, which created the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit for seniors.
Mr. White served on the state, DC, and Judiciary Committee staffs of former U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), recent Chairman of the Finance Committee and senior member of the HELP and Judiciary Committees, from 1996 to 2001. While with Chairman Hatch, Mr. White covered issues in health care, defense, and trade. At the time of his departure from the Chairman’s staff, he was serving as Deputy Communications Director.
Mr. White, a lifelong Republican, has been active in the Party and campaigns since college. He worked on Senator Hatch’s 2000, 2006 and 2012 re-election campaigns and also participated in numerous other campaign activities, including the NRSC Special Teams program for Senators Thune (2004), Burns (2006), and Toomey’s (2010) Senate races.
A native of Towanda, Pennsylvania and graduate of the University of Utah, Mr. White received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations.
